The Third Eye Chakra: Seeing the Inner and Outer Worlds

The Third Eye Chakra is the energy center for spiritual reflection and insight. It is located in the brain, at the brow, just above the nose. It allows you to experience clear thought and vision. The energy of this Chakra is seeing – both inner and outer worlds. The Third Eye Chakra allows you to access your inner guidance that comes from the depths of your being. It allows you to slice through the surface and access deeper truths.

The Third Eye Chakra is all about seeing everything as it is, by floating above from the vantage point of the witness, by observing your thoughts without judgment, or from simply being mindful in each moment.

The function of the Third Eye Chakra is propelled by the principle of openness and imagination. It requires examining self-limiting ideas and developing wisdom that comes from a perspective that transcends the duality of good or bad, black or white, all or nothing. The third eye is not only the seat of wisdom, but also the seat of consciousness. This is where you can see what is going on and you also have the awareness to know what it means.

Unfolding the Third Eye Chakra

The spiritual aspect of the Third Eye Chakra is the ability to perceive the workings of the Divine and become one with it. The Third Eye Chakra immerses you in the Universal stream of consciousness and carries you to your inner wisdom. It’s no accident that this wisdom – your intuition, inner voice, or sixth sense – comes from your sixth energy center. As you unfold the petals of your Third Eye Chakra, you begin to recognize patterns. You can see where you have been, where you are stuck, and where you are going. You begin to experience moments of insight and clarity. You are recognizing your patterns and are able to relate everything to a larger picture and what it means. You begin to see that you can consciously create your life, and that your vision for the future is a creative endeavor.

Indigo is the Third Eye Chakra color. It is a color of wisdom and deep inner knowing. Indigo opens the door to the Divine and it is the color associated with the night. It is characterized by its soft radiance that reminds you of the moonlight. It is at night, by the light of the moon, when your senses become finer and a different part of you awakens. Indigo brings clarity to the senses – your seeing, hearing and feeling. Indigo energy is an energy of deep change. It allows you to transform the energies of lower Chakras into higher spiritual vibrations.

Indigo Energy Characteristics

People with strong indigo energy have a noticeable spark in their eyes. Their eyes are bright and you sense deep wisdom when you look into them. It is a calm, yet strong energy which shifts, changes and transforms. Indigo energy connects the material and the symbolic, the inner and the outer. Indigo also represents synchronicity and going with the flow of life. This means that you are not imposing your own ego or will on the situation. Any action you take simply flows through you and everything is accomplished effortlessly. The gift of indigo energy is that you are at peace with yourself and with the flow of your life. You realize that there is nothing that needs to be changed in your life, all is well, all is a part of the Divine.

The Third Eye Chakra is associated with the pineal gland. This gland is in charge of regulating your body’s natural rhythms, including sleep and wake time. It is located in the part of the brain that is associated with perception, and the effect of light and altered or mystical states of consciousness. It’s positioned close to the optical nerves, and as such, sensitive to visual stimulations and changes in lighting. The Third Eye Chakra is an instrument to perceive the more subtle qualities of reality. It goes beyond the more physical senses into the realm of subtle energies. Awakening your third eye allows you to open up to your intuition and inner perception.

Because it is connected with a different way of seeing and perceiving, the Third Eye Chakra’s images are often hard to describe verbally. Putting you in touch with the ineffable and the intangible, it is associated with archetypes, as well as spirits. Third eye visions are also often more subtle than regular visions. They may appear a bit blurry, cloudy, ghost-like, or dream-like. Sometimes however, the inner visions might be clear like a movie playing in front of your eyes.

Activated Third Eye Chakra Energy

A fully activated Third Eye Chakra unites both sides of the brain; the right hemisphere’s creativity with the left hemisphere’s logical and analytical thinking. When your Third Eye Chakra is open, you not only see but you also understand. As the seat of intuition and wisdom, an open and balanced third eye allows you to see life with clarity and accuracy.

Blocked Third Eye Chakra Energy

If your Third Eye Chakra is blocked you may be disconnected from your intuition, insight and inner knowing. You may feel lost when it comes to your spiritual purpose and life path. You may experience tension headaches in your brow area, have poor memory, and have difficulty making decisions. A blocked Third Eye Chakra can also cause problems with your physical well-being. Since this energy center governs the pituitary gland and neurological function, your body’s ability to fight infection, regulate sleep and maintain balanced metabolic function is compromised. As a result, you may find you are frequently sick, suffer with insomnia and have poor eyesight. An overactive Third Eye Chakra manifests as deep sadness, loneliness or delusions and hallucinations. It is not uncommon to experience vivid dreams, nightmares and heightened skepticism.

Balancing the Third Eye Chakra

Sustaining awareness of Third Eye Chakra energy might require focus and the ability to relax into a different way of seeing things. When you focus your mind and consciousness, you can see beyond the distractions and illusions that get in the way. Aptly named, the third eye is instrumental in your ability to visualize. And it only makes sense that one remedy for alleviating the issue of a third eye blockage is meditation.

Depending on the severity of the blockage, you may need to incorporate not only Chakra healing meditation, but also yoga or other forms of energy healing, from reiki to acupuncture and sound therapy – such as Chakra bowls or tuning forks. Aromatherapy is another useful tool for Chakra balancing. To heal the Third Eye Chakra, essential oils such as clary sage, patchouli and juniper will assist in balancing the energy or increase movement and energy flow.

The use of Chakra crystals and healing stones for Chakra cleansing is also common. The vibrational frequencies of crystals can help restore balance when there is a deficiency or excess of energy leading to a blocked or overactive Third Eye Chakra. Like the Chakras, each stone has its own frequency. Although it is common practice to choose stones of the same color as their corresponding Chakra, it isn’t always necessary as long the stone has the same vibrational frequency as its associated Chakra. Some indigo stones and other options for healing the Third Eye Chakra are sodalite, amethyst and celestite.

When exploring ways you can restore balance to your Chakra system, consider adding healing foods to your diet. Just as each Chakra has its own vibrational frequency, color, and function, there are also foods that help bolster individual Chakra function. When concentrating on the Third Eye Chakra, consider adding naturally indigo-colored foods, such as eggplant, purple grapes, purple cabbage or purple onions.

Many people don’t think about optimizing their energy or emotions using tea, but it’s also an easy and inexpensive way to create balance in your Chakras. Mugwort helps open the Third Eye Chakra and can allow you to see through your sixth sense. It brings more active dreams to help you connect to your intuition and will allow you to start to sense the intentions of others. It heightens the imagination so you can visualize more vividly and connect to spiritually healing dimensions of perception. Alternatively, you can make a strong tea and add it to your bathwater and soak in it while reading or meditating.
